|Edward J. Gilroy, Sr.|
|Edward "Ned" Gilroy Sr. was born in Ireland. We were told he was born in a small fishing village on the coast of County Sligo not far from Sligo Town. According to his naturalization papers he was born in Ireland in 1853 and immigrated to the USA in April of 1872 through New York.
I have not been able to locate the family in County Sligo - however, the border with County Mayo changed a few times over the years so it could be County Mayo we want.
Edward's younger brother Peter Gilroy also immigrated to the US, and resided in Pittston, PA. Peter married Mary Barrett and had a large family. It is believed that the Gilroys already in Pittston may have been uncles to Edward and Peter.
Edward and Peter's parents were Hugh Gilroy and Bridget Casey, according to Edward's death certificate.
Edward married Mary Kelly Reap and had 4 children with her, Edward, Michael, Bridget and Mary.
Mary was a widow having been married to Patrick Reap. The Reaps lived in Pittston, PA. Mary and Patrick Reap had 5 sons: James, John, Peter, Patrick, Anthony.
|Other Gilroy Brothers|
|A third brother, Michael, stayed in Ireland although some of his children came to Luzerne County, PA.
Bridget Gilroy, daughter of Michael, married John Clarke and lived in Duryea. The youngest daughter of Bridget Gilroy and John Clarke, Rose Clarke Regan, lived in Avoca and helped my Uncle William Gilroy gather some of the initial family history.
John Gilroy, her brother, also lived in Duryea, Luzerne County.
