| William McHale was born in Cum, Lahardane, County Mayo, Ireland. He was the son of William McHale and Bridget Moran of Cum. Honor McHale's family is believed to be from Terrybaun, south of Lahardane. William and Honor both came to the USA and were married in Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County, PA. After their marriage, William and Honor lived in Avoca, Luzerne County, PA. The children of William and Honor were: Bridget (Gilroy) Michael Mary Helen (Casey) Anna (Megargee) Kathryn |

| My mother, Lenore Gilroy Oliver, told me that William was a school teacher. Since he was a miner in the US, she must have meant back in County Mayo, Ireland. Other McHales from Cum Lahardane were schoolteachers so it is entirely probable that he was. William had been educated in the National School in Lahardane, County Mayo. William taught other Irish immigrants in Avoca to read and write English in the evenings. He also taught advanced subjects to his children after they had left school and went to work, including science and algebra. This additional schooling allowed my Grandmother Bridget McHale Gilroy to leave her job in the silk mills and go to nursing school. Bridget, Anne and Mary all became nurses. |
