Because County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland, is so remote and was hit hard during the great famine of the 1840s,  it lost many of its citizens to famine and to immigration. Consequently, quite a few Americans have ancestral links to Mayo. Unfortunately, (or fortunately if you don't want Mayo to get as "touristy" as other parts of Ireland) Mayo doesn't get the respect it deserves from travel sites and tourists.

There is much to see and do in Mayo while not being subjected to the crowds you will find in some of the southern counties such as Kerry and Cork.
